Mahashweta : By Sudha Murty








Mahashweta is a Kannada novel written by Sudha Murthy .Sudha Murthy's books are known for its simple yet intrigued writing.Through this book Sudha Murthy brings light to the misconception of leukoderma imbibed in the minds of Indian Society and its brutal consequences women have to face when they are shunned by their own loved and dear ones. 

This book comprises of a protagonist "Anupama" who is described by the author as beautiful , stunning 
an engaging artist and a Sanskrit erudite  who fells in love with Dr. Anand during her play "Mahashweta". 
Dr. Anand gets attracted to Anupama's equitsite beauty , irrespective of the difference in their financial background they get married and Dr. Anand moves to London for his higher studies for Anupama to join him later as her mother-in-law insist her to stay till the Laxmi Pujan. 
After marriage Anupama is seen adjusting  to dominating mother-in-law and narcissist sister-in-law whose has a clandestine love affair unbeknownst to her mother-in-law. Soon Anupama gets a white patch during the Laxmi Pujan and her worst fears come true she is diagnosed with leukoderma . Anupama decides to hid it from her in laws knowing their orthodox mentality. Her in-laws soon find about her leukoderma when she trips from stairs revealing her leukoderma patch. Anupama is disowned by her in-laws and soon by her husband  who is too meek to stand for his own wife. 


There begins the journey of Anupama which is full of surrows and struggle , yet through her strong will and kind heart she ends up as a strong independent women . This book is a must read its insightful and Anupama's journey will surely give you the courage to fight our demons.

  7. Whether Sudha Murthy actually writes the novels credited to her is debatable. However, this seems to be sad novel from the word go.
